It’s been a long time coming, frankly, but Amazon have finally released their Kindle for Mac application, which allows OS X users to read the same Amazon ebooks as they would on a standalone Kindle. The free software has the same functionality as its previously-released PC counterpart: not only can you buy ebooks from Amazon’s bookstore, but thanks to Whispernet both bookmarks and the furthest point to which you’ve read will be synchronized across Kindle and Kindle for Mac.

“The $9.99 price that Amazon offers was selling the books at close to a loss ”
Sorry, but how the hell can you make a LOSS on a digital product?
Considering nothing physical is created, how can the publisher not make a profit?? What percentage is the author getting! I’m damn sure its not 90% or above, and thats what it would need to be to put them “close to a loss”.
I smell some serious BS here. You can buy a HARDBACK for $20 or so, with paperbacks going for $6 or less in some cases. There is no way in this universe its cheaper to cut down a forest and press it into a book than send out an electronic copy.

Tim, good points. And believe me, I know about available space to content issues! LOL!

I agree with your analysis on ROI. Targeting specific demos/customers is key on ROI. We used to print a grocery ad store here in Chicago with a weekly run of 2 mil. One version, two million copies inserted into a handful of newspapers. Now, that same insert is printed in 9 versions for a slightly less press run. A Spanish version, a version with top shelf products, etc, all targeting specific zipcodes (cultural/economic differences).

No doubt digital ads can pinpoint (and change/update) specific demos more accurately. Why send 50,000 copies of a Spanish version to an area that has bi-lingual residents? The non-bilingual will navigate to a Spanish newsite, the bi-lingual will probably head to news sites in their native tongue. So right there, adv. just increased their targeted demo percentage.

I understand your view on a tiered content website. And that may be the right path, now that I think about it. How many times are you going to go to site X, read some free content, then see content you want to read, but it’s members only? Not long, I imagine before one plucks down the credit card and signs up for a subscription. But once someone signs up, they’ll be less inclined to sign up elsewhere (unless site X subscription includes access to other material. Example: Chicago Tribune and LA Times, WGN, etc, all news outlets under parent co.)

And yes, the cost of print is huge. If elimnated or significantly reduced, ROI will increase. But I, a middle aged guy, looks at value, and I don’t see it with eBooks. I think the price for an e-copy of a book compared to print is off base. The cost to bring a book to press or the web is practically the same, it’s just when you decide to run the press that costs skyrocket. So, I don’t see why a $20 copy of a book would cost $15 electronically. That’s gouging. And I ACTUALLY would adapt to eBooks if the price was 1/3rd. And I would buy MORE often.

Thanks again, keep up on this topic. I think a lot of the puzzle is still in the air. And don’t forget about all those people who work in the pressrooms, they will be in the unemployment line.

One of the challenges of any article is obviously the limited space to say all that needs to be said. I agree this is a very important topic and it is one I have engaged in with many advertising and marketing agencies over the past year.

I do have number of presentations we go through that explain how the future of advertising is actually quite bright and can lead to a good deal more ROI then the way it is currently done. I don’t have time to go into all of that with a comment so I will share a couple of thoughts in response.

First of all I disagree that all we will be left with is paid sites that will still contain the same advertising tactics as we have today. I believe each content site will have a mix of free and paid content.

The free will obviously be monetized through ads, and will probably be more general ads. The free version will also not include many things the paid / subscription version will. Things like certain editorials, and other premium ad ons.

The premium version will be a much more deep and full experience. It may not appeal to everyone but it will appeal to a great deal of people. For some consumers free is all they want and the content owner can monetize the free but others will want more then the free version offers so they will subscribe. The opportunity for the paid service should it include ads is that they can be more targeted and relevant, and with a mobile device they could be location aware.

So if I am reading the times in San Jose I can get San Jose relevant ads as well as interact with them to find the nearest location should I be interested.

Lastly to your coupon point. Re-invent the coupon and imagine a better way. Mobile coupons for example are very interesting but have a long way to go.

I know I am only scratching the surface but in my deeper discussions with advertising and marketing firms by the end they are extremely encouraged about how this digital realm can have increased ROI for them in all areas.

First, I want to state that I’ve been in the printing/publishing industry for almost since the 1980’s. I’ve worked in both the commercial side(adverisments) of printing and in book printing, and have seen the digital evolution/revolution of print.

The amount of money spent on print ads in comparison to print books needs to be evaluated. The number of presses dedicated to ads vs. books isn’t even close. I would do weekly runs of 20 million just for a midwest home improvement store! When I did work for Simon & Schuster, a big run was 100,000+.

What I’m trying to state, that I haven’t seen ANYWHERE from the tech press, is, “how will this device change advertising in the publishing world?”

Think about it. Besides bills, what do people get in their snail mailbox? What funds newspapers? Magazines?

Do you think all those inserts in the Sunday paper/mailbox a0re just put there because the stores want their ads in so and so paper. Hell no. Everything in print costs more than anyone can imagine. Newspapers charge customers for inserting the pre-printed flyers. The printed flyers cost crazy money. Try sending the same ad direct (snail mail, targeted consumers), you just increased cost 60 percent (USPS bulk is not cheap when you’re talking 500,000 and more).

Tim, you mention the NY Times. I live in Chicago, printing capitol of the nation. Our Chicago Tribune has a whole shrink-wrapped ad section in the Sunday edition. How will this play into the business model of all digital news? The easy answer is, make it a clickable section. Advertisers don’t want that. They want mandatory viewing. Everyone b-ches and moans about ads now on the ‘net. Can you imagine when the NY Times isn’t getting the inserting cost or viewers to the clickable ad site what their web pages will end up looking like? I don’t even want to think about it.

What will happen, and I’m very dissapointed that you failed to mention this, is that ALL currently free news outlets, will become paid subscription sites. So, what we’re left with, is the same or less content, MORE ads, and end user costs staying the same, but with no tangilble copy. How does one take that grocery ad, etc, to the store. They print it out. Oh, wait you say, why not just bring your “tablet”? C’mon, you can fold an ad into your pocket, but you got to lug around a device. Evolution, not.

In conclusion (I could go on and on), the internet/digital publishing era is here to stay, no doubt. Will this tablet thing be the savior, not so sure. The iPad surely isn’t revolutionary. If anything, it seems like a step back. Tech will take care of the iPads shortcomings, but the business model to sustain publishers will shock the public. The newspaper industry did themselves no favors by throwing their content up on the web for free for years. Only ONE company charged and made a go of it, and now, they others will follow WSJ lead. Imagine the shock people are going to have when everything news is “enter password”. They are working on grouping sites to a subscription, but still, slowly but surely, the web will nickel and dime people away if they don’t do it right.

We shall see, but I have my doubts on the tablet being “it”.

One of the cool services that was unveiled along with the iPad was the new Apple eBook store. The problem with the store that Apple unveiled is that the tech company had negotiated prices with the publishers that would have the books selling for more than they do elsewhere such as Amazon.
