Sony Ericsson have finally come clean on their latest smartphone, and as expected it’s an Android flagship. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 – previously known as the Rachael and the X3 – is a Snapdragon-based touchscreen candybar, with a huge display, 8.1-megapixel camera and some “special sauce” in the shape of two homegrown applications – for communication aggregation and media aggregation – with a custom UI. SlashGear caught up with Sony Ericsson in London yesterday to take a look at the new smartphone, and find out why the company reckons this is the launch not only of the Android X10 but of a new “user experience platform”.

Wow, I smell P990 fiasco all over again. Shipping, uh, later in Q1 (likely 4-6 months). And OS is outdated as it ships but “will get an update to 2.0 eventually”. I went through h311 waiting eagerly for the P990s to ship, finally buying a grey market from China through a friend months before they got here, then checking daily for hope of an OS upgrade to fix sluggish, buggy performance in my region, swearing I’d never own another SE product. The looks and the specs of the X10 had me reconsidering that promise, if it was in stores in the next month, but in 6 months this will be one outdated ‘flagship’ and the chances I’ll bleed on the SE ‘cutting edge’ again are dang slim.
